East London Routes

Three Generations of Lawrence and Porter family

East London Routes is a family history festival bringing together local people to tell the stories of how we came to East London. It is a chance to discover and celebrate our ancestors - Caribbean and African, Turkish and Kurdish, Jewish, Vietnamese, Irish, and South East Asian or from other parts of the UK.

The event will coincide with the 10th anniversary of Every Generation Media and Foundation (EGM). EGM is based in east London and has been at the forefront of developing websites, publications, workshops and films around family learning and cultural heritage, particularly among people from African and Caribbean heritage.

East London Routes will be a creative and interactive way of capturing the lives, history and migration stories of local communities and families using music, film, story-telling, art activities and literature. It will include debates on some of the challenges that have passed between generations, such as poor mental health and physical discipline as well as highlight some of the ways that are stories are being told.

Finally, the event will be an opportunity to see some rare photographic images as part of the National Archives Caribbean Through a Lens project to celebrate the 50 anniversary of the independence of Jamaica and Trinidad.
