Joined by Fair Share Trust Brent’s community development manager Neil Jackson and Patrick Vernon OBE, a family history expert and founder of Every Generation, the group learned about tracing their family tree.
Vernon said: “This was the first time the programme participants had ever attended a family history exhibition. They were able to pick up tips from the various workshops, from family records to DNA testing.”
He added: “A few of them also benefited from the free online searches backed by advice from experts. Everyone felt inspired by attending the show and this will add value to their personal research work.”
Harlesden Routes is a free family history programme taking place in during March 2013 to support local people in their first steps towards learning about and researching their family history.
The sessions will cover different aspects of family history using local records and online archives, photographs, social history, creative writing, interviewing techniques and the importance of DNA.
The next dates are 6 March (creative writing and interviewing family members), 13 March (online sources of family history) and 27 March (sharing your stories and undertaking research)

The programme is running at the Unity Centre, 103 Church Road, London NW10 9EG. The workshop runs from 7.00pm to 8.30pm.
